FOOTWEAR TRADE
MORE UNEMPLOYMENT EFFECT OF IMPORTATIONS The statement that conditions in the boot manufacturing trade have grown worse, and that one small factory was likely to close temporarily at the end of the week was made by a man in the trade when discussing the effect on the industry through heavy importations of Australian footwear. Further dismissals of employees of both sexes through dullness of trade had taken place, it was stated, and a good number of workers were now working short time. One factory proprietor had stated that if conditions did not improve it was possible that his works would close in a fortnight.
