CRICKETER'S TACTICS
STRANG E SCENE AT LORD'S WIDES DELIBERATELY BOWLED (Received September 2, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 3 The Middlesex • Surrey match at Lord's closed to-day -with one of the most extraordinary incidents in the annals of cricket. Fifteen minutes before stumps were due to be drawn Middlesex had scored 178. Holmes, the Surrey captain, bowled three wides in succession. After this byes and wides, interspersed with a few normal balls, made Middlesex a gift of 24 runs. -- .. Holmes' object was to hasten the use of a new ball, which could be obtained at 200 runs. Robins could not conceal Tm annoyance, and the crowd demonstrated against the tactics. Then, to everyone's amazement, the umpires drew stumps with 10 minutes of play still to go. , It transpired that Allen appealed against the light, though there was brilliant sunshine, and the umpires took this excuse to end an unhappy situation.
