VESSEL AGROUND

| BELIEVED TOTAL LOSS! ALL THE GREW RESCUED SYDNEY, Sept, 1 Tho Steam Navigation Company's steamer, Urana (519 tons), ran ashore at 9 p.m. yesterday at the old bar entrance to the Manning River. She is believed to be a total loss, having broken in two. Only the bridge and upper works are showing above the water. Sixteen members of the crew of 17 reached the shore safely in the ship's lifeboat. The remaining man failed to leave with the others and was in a precarious position until he was rescued several hours later by tho crew of a surf boat, which had been rushed from Taree, 10 miles away, by lorry. The Urana grounded on a sunken reef 600 ft. from the shore. Rockets were fired from the ship, which also sent out S.O.S. signals. Ihe sea was moderate but a fog hampered the rescue work.
