BAY OF PLENTY TITLE BRINSDEN RETAINS HONOUR COURSE RECORD EQUALLED [by TKLIiGKAPH —OWN coiirkstondkntl TAURANG A, Tuesday For the fourth annual Bay of Plenty open championship and handicap tournament, held 011 the Gate Pa links, record entries were received, and 100 players competed.
All the events were keenly contested by local players, as well as visitors from 10 different clubs in the North Island. The open championship was retained by H. Brinsden, of (ho Titirangi Club, who played steady golf to return a gross score of 154. His second round of 75 equalled the course record. The outstanding round of the tourney was played by R. Morpeth, of Tauranga, who, off a 10 handicap, returned an 81 gross, a net score of 0 under tho par of the course. At the conclusion of play the club captain, Mr. R. T. Colliding, in the absence of the president, congratulated the winners, and called on Mrs. Phelan to present the trophies. When Brinsden received the championship cup for the fourth time he received a round of hearty applause. Kesults in detail are as follows:

AUSTRALIAN LADIES' TITLE
MISS B. KERNOT SUCCESSFUL
Miss Betty Kernot won the Australian women's golf championship by beating Jliss Burt fa Cheney, 6 up and 5. over 3o noles at the Metropolitan course in Melbourne last week. With a splendid round ot 79 in the. morning, Miss Kernot gained a lead of eigln. holes. Miss Kernot won the first hole in the afternoon, to be 9 up, hut Miss then" fought desperately and reduced her deficit to (i up after 27 holes. ihc first four holts on the final nine were halved. Miss Kernot taking the match at the 31st. . Miss Kernot's splendid display gained the admiration of all, hut Miss Cheney lost the accuracy which enabled her to wear down her opponents in the earlier rounds. Her shots lacked power, and were frequently off the line. Her putting was good, however, and saved her defeat by a greater margin. Kernot on the other hand, played like a machine for the most part, and her powerful drives were often 30 to 00 yards ahead of B S olh h those S players have been selected to represent Australia against ° the Tasman Cup contest at NaP" end of this month. Misses S. lolhurst, hj,. m. Hutton and Mrs. S. Morpeth will complete the visiting team.
