VETERANS' GOLF

TO.UBNEY AT EOTOBUA SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND C. REDHEAD LEADS FIELD [FROM OUR OWN COHRKSI'ONDEN'I'I ROTORUA, Tuesday C. Redhead, of Rotorua, with a net 129, took tho leading position in the ."2 qualifiers for the New Zealand Veterans' Golf Cup, which is being contested on the Rotorua Club's course. Off a handicap of 18 Redhead to-day returned tho excellent net score oi 61 in the second qualifying round. He was accompanied in this feat by Sir Henry Horton, of Auckland, who improved upon his gross round of 86 yesterday to return a card of 80 and take second position in the list of qualifiers with an aggregate net, of 134. This was an excellent recovery, as yesterdav Sir Henry was thirteenth on the list with a net 70.

S. Powdrell, of Wanganui, last year's winner of the trophy, who plays on a six handicap, crashed badly alter returning a good card of <2 net on the first day, and, as a result, failed to qualify for tho Veterans' Cup, but qualified for tho Arikikapakapa Cup matches.

H. R. Lusk, holder of the Arikikapakapa Cup, also found trouble and narrowly gained entry into the first di\ision with a net 145. Best Gross Score The best gross score during the day was returned by R. G. Rainger, of Auckland, who improved two strokes on his first round to return with a card of 75, the homeward journey being done in the excellent figures of 35. A. ]}. La wrence, of Auckland, was another to show an improvement to-day, when ho reduced his first gross round of 89 to 79, giving him a net 66, and enabling him to qualify quite comfortably. In the Arikikapakapa Cup section the leader is C. Worthington, of Rotorua, who, with a net 145, was unlucky to lose his position in the major division on the count back. A. Hammond, of Rotorua. who yesterday returned a good net card of 69, also had a day off to-day, and, with an increase of 10 strokes for the second round, he had to be content to gain a position in the second division. Match play in both competitions will be commenced to-morrow. Two rounds will be played to-morrow and on Thursday, leaving Friday clear for the finals.
