August 29 Scenes similar to .those witnessed at Kragujevatz last week, when Dr. Yankovitch, Minister of Mines, was pelted with- stones and eggs, occurred at Valjevo. A meeting being addressed by Dr.-Yankovitch was broken up by peasants. The police fired on the crowd, killing 10 people and wounding 13. Dr. Yankovitch fled to a hotel, where he was further pelted and where further «n damage occurred. • Speakers at protest meetings warned the Regent, Prince Paul, that unless 'he dismissed the Government the peasants would march to Belgrade and enforce their demands. At the meeting at Kragujevatz, Dr. Yankovitch protested against the attitude of the Orthodox Church in connection with the dispute about the concordat with the Vatican. In consequent© of the quantity of eggs thrown at him and his supporters the price On the local market rose from a halfpenny to twopence. All were sold. The peasants on that themselves with guns and- axes and the police fere forced to withdraw.
