NORMAL CONDITIONS OBTAIN
. Normal conditions again obtained aib Orakei yesterday when the carpenters employed on the construction of State houses resumed work after a dispute £r over wages with the Fletcher Con* struction Company, Limited. The decision to return to work yesterday was made at a meeting in the Trades Hall last Thursday. The men concerned in the dispute, totalling 186, had been idle since August 19. At a meeting on the morning of August 20 -they decided not to return until their pay was increased from the award rate of 2s 6sd au hour . to 2s Sd an hour. Negotiations for & settlement on following days were unsuccessful. -
There was a representative attendance of the men at the meeting tas.t Thursday, after which the secretary of -'the Carpenters and .Joiners' Union, Mr. J. G. Kennerley, announced .that the men had decided to return to .work. An important feature in making a settlement possible, it was stated, was the assurance that arrangements would be made to hold an early conference between - the union representatives and the Master Builders' Association to discuss the and other conditions _ after the * pronouncement of the Arbitration Court on Standard wages. It was also stated that the men had been given to understand that any agreement reached would be operative from the time of the Arbitration Court's judgment. g!y, , ,
