HASTINGS HORSES

pakanui very pit CLETRAC IN GOOD 'FORM WYKEMIST'S FINE EFFORT [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] Hastings, Monday Hawkc's Day horses who have left to compete at New Plymouth this week include Penology, Paetutu, Flame Queen, Iddo, Wykemist, Cletrae and Buster Brown. Penology and Paetutu, who are engaged in cross-country • events, have both been successful in point-to-point races. Paetutu appears to bo the better, and may bo difficult to beat in tho Trial Hunters' Steeplechase. Flame Queen, a three-year-old filly, has been galloping well. She is engaged in tho Weraroa Stakes on Thursday. _ Iddo is to start in the Whenuakura Handicap on Thursday, but later ho will compote over hurdles, and a race may come his way before he returns home. Buster Brown Gallops Wykemist won well in June, but since then in all races has injured his stillo at post and rail fences, which he does not jump well. He possesses 'pace abovo tho average 'chaser, and has prospects if he fences cleanly. Cletrae is one of Mr. G. D. Beatson's team and won tho Ladies' Bracelet at Awapuni in July. In his' present form ho should go very close to winning again. Buster Brown ran a solid six furlongs on the plough one morning recently in 1.161, which * demonstrated that he is in capital trim. He should be difficult to beat when started. A largo team will leave next week for Wanganui, and over 30 horses aro expected to, make the trip. As a result, the local tracks aro very busy at present. In the latest gallops Slippery and Flame Queen ran four furlongs in 51s, with both on the bit. Pakanui created surprise by running five furlongs on a dead track in I.ls. Ho looks very fit, and his work has been outstanding. Geira Working Well

Jacyntli, who is settling down with careful handling by S. Roid. easily ran three furlongs in_ 375. Her stable companion, Geira, is working as well as any hack at Hastings, and had no difficulty in running half-a-mile in 50s. She goes to \Vanganui for the Spring Hack Handicap, five furlongs, on the second day. Mahutai and Felicitation were going comfortably while _ running fivo furlongs in 1.5. Felicitation is one to keep in mind for middle-distance hack races. Joe Louis ran half-a-mile in 50}s. He is a good track galloper, but his public form has been disappointing. Lindrum and Gironde went well to run four furlongs in 49is. Lindrum is a. maiden Siegfried three-year-old, who is likely to bo well supported at Wanganui. Shirred Ribbon held the measure of Maine over six furlongs in 1.18. Maine lias never looked better, but is in need of a race or two Jvahikatoa and Hunting Cat covered tho same distance in 1.17. Hunting Cat is standing up to his work satisfactorily.

Cletrac did well to register 1.46 for a mile when brought home by Solio over the last four furlongs in 335. Cletrac may prove the best of the Hastings horses 'at New Plymouth on Thursday, when ho will be ridden by Mr. ,G. G. Beatson, a capable gentleman rider. Nelumbo Sprints Twice

J. Cameron's brilliant hack Nelumbo wont wide out and under a strong pull dashed over three furlongs twice in 38s. She may be seen in a favourable light at "Wanganui. Top.Hat, with Tommy Atkins, gave a pleasing display over seven hurdles. Top Hat ran third to Iddo and Bcgorrah in his only_ stai-t to date over hurdles, but has improved considerably since, so that it should take a good hack hurdler to beat him at Wanganui. Wykeinist never put a foot wrong while covering a round and a-lialf of the steeplechase course. He lias only to negotiate the post and rails safely on Thursday to make it difficult for Sleepy and others in the EgmontWanganui Hunt Cup. Many two-year-olds were sprinted down the straight, tho most impressive being Merry Simon, a chestnut by Gascony from Lady Makere. Diana Tetrix, the only Hastings juvenile going to Wanganui, was never at top oyer half-a-mHo in 5.35. P. Atkins leaves on Wednesday to link up with F. Davis' team for Sydney. Atkins will do tho riding in Australia.
