SUCCESS OF WAIHOU TEAM
Bugby football competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon, when some representative fixtures were decided. Tho To Aroha Rugby Union's championship was finalised, Waihou defeating City. Tho Technical Old Boys' team suffered its first defeat of the season. Tho following results wore forwarded by correspondents of the Herald:— Te Aroha.—ln the final of tho Te Aroha Rugby' Union's senior championship, played at Te Aroha, the Waihou team defeated City by 14 points to 0. in a hard and even game. The teams were equal on points, and the result of this match uives tho championship to Waihou. Tho competition has been a hinhly successful one, all the teams bavins: played Rugby of a high standard, and tho issue being in doubt until the final guuie. Hamilton.- —The Technical Old Boys team suffered its first defeat of the season at Rugby Park, when Frankton scored 10 points to 6 in a hard, even match. The Frankton forwards, although very light, worked haru and secured possession from the scrums moro frequently than their opponents. Everest, showing superior speed and good passing, played particularly well in the Frankton backs. Pearson and Jones also gave good performances. Hceps, as fullback, did well. Technical was not up to its usual standard. Haughey, o:ti the wing, and Dalbeth, fullback, were the most prominent backs, while Cloush and Flannagan showed up in the forwards. The play was fast and opes, and Frankton well deserved its victory. The match between Old Boys and Cambridge Blues resulted in a .win for tho former by 28 points to 0. Dovi, Old Boys, played halfback instead of his usual position as first five-eighths. R.. Paterson at fullback; gave his customary display of brilliant kicking and fast following up. _ Sharp played a good game in the Old Boys pack, • and Kirkbride. Barber and D. Paterson also played well. . The Cambridge Blues showed a decided lack of teamwork. The backs bandied tho ball badly and tho combination, was ragged. The forwards were heavy and played a comparatively good game, but could not mako up the disadvantage of a -poor set of .backs; The field, as a result o: indifferent weather and the visit of the Spnng- . boks on, Wednesday, was in very poor condition The game between Auckland Suburbs (intermediate) and the Hamilton third grado representatives resulted in a win for ttie local team by 17 points to 3. Pukekohe-Waiuku.— By defeating Old Boys by three to nil, White Star won the senior championship. The game was placed at Biedisloe Park, Pukekohe. before a fairly large attendance of spectators. . With the ground heavy from previous rain, and a 6bower during the match, conditions militated against fast play, but. when the teams tried open' work, which they did toward the interval and again in the second spell, the ball went up and downfield at a bright pace. For the first 23 minutes the play was close -and dull. Both teams then began to handle more freely. V. Sauer scored for White Star, the try not being converted. After half-time, play, continued brightly. In the closing stages, play became somewhat ragged, partly due to the fact that before the game ended five players had been ordered off the field allegedly for illegal tactics. The teams were level at the head of the competition to the match. Old Boys, last year's champion side, is thus tho runner-up, two points behind White Star. Secondary schools: Sacred "Heart, 12, Franklin representatives, 11. Third crade: Pukekohe. Technical High School, 9, "White Star, 8; Primary schools (Morrison Shield): Pukekohe,, 9, Manukau, 5. Paeroa.—A representative game was played between Paeroa and Waiuku, the focal team winning by 15 to 10. The ground •was in good order. The visitors had the> bet- / ter of tha first spell, which ended with no score. The second spell was much more interesting, Waiuku opening thp "score with a try by Dromgool. Paeroa rallied, and a passing rush ended in Morrison scoring. A further lack movement put Maunders over, giving Paeroa the lead of 6 to 3. Swan later scored a beautiful try, running half the length of the field.' Further tries for Paeroa were scored bv Morrison and Vedder, while for Waiuku Foratovich kicked a field goal and C. Thomson scored a try. The Paeroa B and Katikati'teams played a drawn ganie, with no score. The final two rounds for the Fleming Shield, between primary schools teams in the Thames Valley Union's area, were played at Paeroa. In tho semi-finals, Waini 12. beat Hauraki Plains,. 0, and Te Aroha, 9, beat Thames, 0. Tho final between Te Aroha -and Thames was a keenly-contested game, which resulted in a win for Te Aroha by 6 to 3.' Morrinsvllle.— Played aa a curtain-raiser to the Finlay Cup game was tho match between the Morrinsville and Matamata junior representatives in the elimination game for the Clarke Cup. Morrinsville won by 14 points to U. The 'game was very willing and even; and showed that both Matamata and Morrinsvillo have some Rood players for future years. For Morrinsville, tries were scored by. V. Elisor, R. Hart, G. Drabble and R. latter, converting one. . For-Matamata, Hopkins, and R. Adams scored and Cnnnell converted a try and kicked a penalty goal.. Eastern Suburbs, a visiting junior team from Auckland, defeated United by 1-1 points to 8. ■The j Matamata third grade representatives were defeated by Morriwville at the Recreation ground by i 22 points to 16. i
Cambridge,—ln a further round of. the Stag competition Taupiri added to its series of wins .Jjy defeating Cambridge Stars by 8 points- U) -3. The match was played under ideal conditions at Victoria Square, but both teams lacked finish to their movements. Catlev, the Waikato hooker, received plenty of weight in the scrums, which enabled him to feed his backs, who were superior to those of the Stars. Taylor, Catley and hcrcpoka were the best visiting forwards, and O'Hearne and Matanga shone in the backs. Cooper, was easily Stars' leading forward. Kerepoka scored twice _for Taupiri, Tapp converting one try. J. Kelly kicked a pen- ' alty goal for Stars. Third grade, final: Northern,' 6, Hautapu, 6. Fourth grade: Leamington defaulted to Hautapu. Tauranga.—A match for the Parata Cup •was played at Tauranga between the Tailrsnga and Te Puke representative teams in fine weather. Thf. game was fast and open. Tauranga led at half-time by 6 to 0 tries being gained by M. Murray and G. Mchenzie. Four niore tries were added for Pauranga in tho second half by Bidois, M. Murray, H. 'Bavmcnt and M. Ritinui, one being converted by M. Murray. The final score was:— Tauranga, 20; Te Puke. 0. A junior match between Tauranga and To Puke was - won by Te Puke by It to ti. , - Rotorua,™Defcndincr the Shalfoon Shield, in the first match rince they secured the tronhv at' Opotiki some weeks ago, the Botorua Junior Rugby representatives were defeated at A raw a Park by Whakatano b.v 5 points to 3. Tho match was particularly bard fought throughout, and was productive of flashes of sptf tit ular play. The Whakatanc challengers were a strong combination, both back and forward, and thoroughly enrned their victory. Although defeated, tho holders also plaved well, but their backs were not up to the standard of tho visiting players. Te Kuitl<—-In the final of the Pukeweka Shield, played at l?u<;by Park, To huiti turned tho tables on Pio Pio by defeating it bv 11 points to 9 after a very keen game. The Te Ku'iti: team showed a great improvement in the forwards, and the backs displayed Such penetration, especially K. Barlow. On the Pio Pio side Trust played a fine game in the forwards, and Richards in the backs. Rangirirl.—Senior representatives: Waikare 17, Mangatawhiri, 0. The game was a bright one, with the teams moro even.y matched than tho score indicates. Juniors: Rangiriri wOn by default from Ohinewai, and holds the challenge cup. Putaruru.—ln the first round of tho Pularuru Rugby Union's competition for the Jensen Cup, knock-out, Arapuni defaulted to Putaruru, . ' !
Whangarol,—Patrons wore treated to a Bno variety of football at Rugby lark, the weather being ideal. The principal senior fixture was between Hikumnsri, in tho championship competition, and Km J Oil. the match being Avon by H'lkurangi by -4 points to 6 The winners proved too strong, especially in the backs. For the winners rics rnro scored by Goodwin ('2). Campbell (-), Gibson and Rarity, while J. Br.vdon. Parity and Goodwin each converted a try. J. R'"?. Bcored a try and kicked a penalty goal for lua loa. The Whangnrei senior B representatives defeated the Otamatoa senior B representative team by 1-1 points to 5. The City seniors, who had a bye. played a friendly match with Houhnra, City winning by 14 points to 13. The AVliangarci High School socond fifteen defeated the Auckland Grammar School third fifteen by 5 points to 0. 0. Fagan scored and H. James converted for High School. Other vrames resulted: —Seniors: Old Boys. 21. Maungakaramea, (>. Juniors:• City, 11, HIKUj rangi, (>; Old Boys. 3, \\ aikiekie, 3. Third grade, Onerahi, 30, Old Boys, 7. fifth grade: Maunu, 6, High School, 3. Whakatanc. —Kangitalkl beat off a strong challenge from Wbakatano for tho Te Hum-nui-Apanui Shield, winning by 0 points to 5. The game wns played at To Tcko, in fino weather, and drew tho best gato of tho season. Tho spectators saw some good football. Kaiioritaiki scored first when the captain. Howell, kicked a goal after a serum on the twentyfive. However, he lucky that tho field goal was allowed, as a Whakatane nliin jumped and got his fingers to tho ball as it wept over his head. Up till then Hancitalki had dono most of tho attacking, but. whakatane took a turn, and smart following UP •rave the side a try which was converted. Ra.nsitniki started poorly in the second spoil, but brightened later, Ihe forw: |r dhwon<s per cent of the scrums, and the backs had plentv of chances. Tho winger, Ratana. raced round behind Ihe posts, and the try was converted and there was no further score, nlthr.a'gh Kangitaiki was almost tbroach two or three times. Thames.—The local representatives successfully resisted Waihi's challenge for the Peace Cup, the visitors being defeated bj 1 pot ts to 3. FIVE ORDERED OFF INCIDENTS AT PUKEKOHE [from our own CORRESPONDENT] PUKEKOHE, Sunday A feature of tho senior Rugby match at I iedisloo Park, Pukekohe. yesterday afternoon . was the ordering off of no fewer than five players. Just before half-time Smith and Hewitt staged what appeared to be a privato wrestling bout of several seconds' duration when neither had the ba 1 and they were ordered off, reducing the playing strength of each side to I t men. A few minutes before time Hoean, the Old Boys halfback, was sent to join them. It was not clear to tlie spectators exactly what his offence was. A minute Or two before time Page and Wright appeared to tret into grips and were also ordered oJT ; reducing the White Star team to 13 and Old B °This° incident caused other Old Boys to follow Page and Wright from the field. However, they were restrained by their teammates Bud came back to finish tho game.
