AUCKLAND'S WEATHER

RAIN RECORDED ON 25 DAYS COLD WINDS EXPERIENCED July was a month of very unsettled weather, with generally cold winds from south to south-westerly directions, but the rainfall was the mean average expected at this period, according to the report of Mr. S. M. Yallop, official Government observer. The total rainfall for the month was 5.38 in. up to 9 a.m. on the 31st, as against 5.09 in. for July of last year. There were three rather heavy falls, otherwise showers prevailed throughout.

General observations were that hail was recorded on two days, dew on three days, slight frosts in Auckland on two days, and thunder on one day. Rain fell on 25 days of the 31 in the month, the maximum of 1.21 in. being recorded on July 24. There were three days on which no sunshine was recorded, and the total yjeriod for the month was 130 hours 12 minutes, which compares favourably with the total of 127 hours 6 minutes shown for July, 1936. The maximum period last month was 9 hours 12 minutes on July 19. The mean shade temperature was 49.87 degrees. In the previous July the figure was 50.20 degrees. The mean maximum stood at 54.G degrees, compared with 55.59 degrees the year before. The respective figures for the mean minimum were 45.14 aud 44.82 degrees. The .lowest reading on -the grass was 30 degrees on July 8, the extreme minimum air temperature 39.50 on July 7, and the extreme maximum 58.6 degrees on July 25. Barometric readings for the month were as follows: —Mean for the month, 30.010; maximum, 30.372 on July 11; minimum, 29.55G on July 26. Sunday Although the majority of the days in July in Hamilton were wet, the total rainfall for the month was well below the average for that month. During the period 3.57 in. fell, as against 4.83 in.. the average for July. For the seven months to date the gauge has recorded 27.55 in. Hamilton's average annual rainfall is 46.32 in.
