FIFTY YEARS AGO

AN UNUSUAL ACCIDENT Traffic accidents were much rarer 50 years ago than they are to-day, but an unusual one was reported in the New Zealand Hebald of July 30, 1887, as follows: — "The other evening a rather serious accident occurred on the Remuera Road in a somewhat peculiar manner. As Mr. Thos. Eade, carrier, was driving along the Remuera Road slowly, a young man on horseback came up the road at a very rapid rate, in fact, galloping hard. As the rider had just passed Mr. Eade, one of tha horse s shoes came off, and the speed at which the horse was being ridden caused the shoe to fly behind him with great force. It struck Mr. Eade over the left eye, reaching over the bridge of the nose, cutting a deep gash all the way. Mr. Eade was stunned, and had the injury occurred to a less robust person it might have been fatal."
