GARDEN PLACE SCHEME
ANOTHER MOVE IN HAMILTON SANCTION FOR LOAN SOUGHT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT*] HAMILTON. Thursday A resolution was proposed by Mr. ,1. E. Tidd at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council that application be made to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of £75.000 for the removal of Garden Place Hill, security to be provided by a special rating area hounded by Hook, Anglesea and Bryce Streets, and the Waikato River. Written objections to the proposal were received from the Garden Place Preservation Society and six ratepayer,s. A petition signed by .'io6 per-, sons, opposing the proposal and asking that ths area be converted into a domain, was also received. The borough solicitors, Messrs. Swarbrick and Swarbrick, wrote stating that it would be impossible to close the street on Garden Place bill and leave as convenient a means of access to the occupants of properties there as they enjoyed at present. The solicitors expressed the opinion that juiv action taken to close the area occupied by the street would bo unsuccessful. Mr. H. M. Hammond pointed out that only 107 of the petitioners were ratepayers, while Mr. r l iclcl said that only 11 of them were ratepayers in the special area. The motion was earned, Messrs. 11, 1). Caro and C. Lafferty dissenting.
