ENJOYABLE CONCERT

BUDAPEST STRING QUARTET One of the richest musical experiences music lovers have had tor a long time was that provided in the Town Hall last night, when the Budapest String Quartet, assisted by Miss Mary Pratt, New Zealand contralto, gave a concert under tho direction of the National Broadcasting Service, the proceeds being in aid of the Mayor's Relief Fund. What the audience lacked in numbers it made up in enthusiasm, and at the close of the programme tlifl players received an ovation seldom witnessed in Auckland. Each artist, Josef Roisinann, Alexander Schneider, Boris Kroyt and Mischa Schneider, was master of his instrument, while tho ensemble was porfcct. Throughout tho evening these plrtvers rose to the very highest point in artistry, while the quality of tone was magnificent. A beautiful, expressive and intelligent rendering was given "Quartet in B Plat Major" (Mozart), while tho execution was, as Mozart's music, demands, the finest. The crispness and daintiness of the second movement in "Quartet in K Flat Major" (Mendelssohn) made a wide appeal, and was followed by a most /satisfying interpretation of the "Andante Expressive." The beautiful, straightforward and unpretentious "Quartet in C Major" (Beethoven) was brilliantly executed, after which the artists were recalled several times.

Miss Pratt proved a popular singer with the audience. She is the possessor of a fine, powerful contralto voice, over which she has complete control. She sang a "Schubert" croup consisting of "Tho Stormy Morning," "Tho Raven" and "My Dwelling Place." The accompanist, Mr. Owen Jensen, is deserving of a word of praise for his sympathetic playing. This was particularly noticeable in the second number, when he displayed artistic insight.
