OTAHUHU INTERESTS
SUNDAY FILMS BANNED STREET LIGHTING FAULTS Permission to screen films at a Sunday evening entertainment was refused by the Otahuliu Borough Council last niglit, when an application was received from the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. W. Morton said that to grant the request would create a precedent, and he suggested that a committee be appointed to investigate, with power to act. Messrs. W. D. Cowper and H. C. Littler said they opposed the application on the information available. A motion to this effect was carried without dissent. Stating that the Otahuhu water was too hard for its requirements, a brewery firm requested permission to take supplies from the Auckland City Council through a pipe-line laid from the northern to the southern. boundaries and through the borough. A plan of the proposed pine-line was submitted. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee for a report, the. Mayor, Mr. C. K. Petrie, M.P., remarking that it would require careful investigation. Complaints were received that the street lighting system was frequently failing. Mr. F. "NY. Grey said the position required firm action. "We are paying for a service that we are not getting," he added. In certain localities the residents were exposed to r*r.ks in negotiating roads in darkness. It was decided to have the Mayor take up tho question of service with the Auckland Electric-Power Board. ''That is a most peculiar attitude," said the Mayor, when a letter was received from the Main Highways Board district engineer advising that no expenditure must be incurred on highways maintenance without adequate monetary authority. "We get word that tho roads require attention, and then T\e have further advice that we must wait for authority before operating," said Mr. Petrie. A further letter from the board suggesting that the council agree to all maintenance work being carried out by the board's staff was received. The council decided to adhere to the' present arrangement. Approval was given of an agreement between the council and the Otahuhu Businessmen's Association for the installation of a street community lighting scheme. The town clerk, Mr. R. W. F. Wood, was instructed to approach the Electric-power Board and have the installation put in hand.
