HIGHER HOSPITAL RATE

BAY OF ISLANDS COUNTY NEW PRINCIPLE ADOPTED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT J KAIKOIIE, Friday To meet the increasing hospital levy, totalling £.'3000, members of the Bay of Islands County Council yesterday were in agreement that the hospital rate would have to N be increased by Jd, and that the rate, which would then be lid, should be struck at the next meeting of the council. This decision was reached following receipt of a letter from the Health Department, which stated that it could not suggest any way in which the estimates could be reduced, aiid that the council should take steps to moot the levy. The ljd rate is expected to produce tne whole amount of the levy, whereas in previous years it was the custom to draw from the general account so as to make up the full amount. Last year £644 was drawn to make up the deficiency, and members considered it a wrong policy to use money that was collected for road maintenance on hospital upkeep, when the greater percentage of patients in the hospitals were Maoris who did not pay any rates.
