SCARCITY OF OYSTERS

WHANGAREI SEASON ENDS TOTAL YIELD 130 SACKS DIMINUTION OF PRODUCTION [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Friday Owing to the comparative scarcity of oysters in the Whangarei Harbour beds the local depot for the sale of oysters will be closed to-morrow. Mr. A. Tilby, Inspector of Fisheries, is making the final arrangements for the closing down. The season opened on June 4 and the yield has been only about 130 sacks. The demand lias been very keen locally, and as a result very few oysters have been sent to the Auckland market. In recent years the production from Whangarei beds has declined to an appreciable extent, attributable to the fact that no planting has been done, and the beds have not been cleaned, us has been done in other localities.
