July 0 Speaking at the opening of the New Zealand Government's nmv offices in Melbourne to-day, the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. W. White, said that if the exported winnings of New Zealand racehorseß in Australia were put alongside merchandise figures, New Zealand would have little cause to seek a further levelling of the trade position. The Minister continued: "In tlio trade between the two countries a total of £67,000 is represented by tho export to Australia of live horses. 'Live' is the correct word,".said Mr White, "for New Zealand horses are neither slow nor dead." Speaking nioro seriously and emphasising tho value of co-operation, the Minister said tho trade between New Zealand find Australia was improving every year. Tho Australian Government had always felt that trado between tho Dominions should bo as free as possiblo. Now 93 per cent of Now Zealand's goods were admitted to Australia duty free. "There is a little row about fruit and vegetables," said Mr. White, "but it is a mere nothing and will adjust itself." The Victorian Chief Secretary, Mr. H.,S, Bailey, said the visits to New Zealand of three Victorian Ministers were not pleasure jaunts but had been made with the object of studying New Zealand conditions and copying features which were in advance of methods here. The New Zealand Trade Commissioner, Mr. W. Taylor, and his representative in Melbourne, Mr. Malcolm, welcomed many guests.
