NINE HORSES TO SAIL

J. FRYER'S FIFTH VENTURE

INTERNATIONAL MAY DO BEST [by telegraph OWN" correspondent] HAWERA, Wednesday T'lio Hawcra trainer J. Fryer is to leave for Sydney bv the Wanganella to-morrow from Wellington with nine horses. This will be his fifth visit in recent years. In spite of the fact that success comes to but few, rich prizes in New South Wales and Victoria aro

magnets which many owners of promising horses are unable to resist. At present it is difficult to estimate the prospects of Fryer's string, but there is plenty of promising material and from it may rise one or more capable of matching the deeds of many other good gallopers who have left these shores. Fryer's team will bo augmented in Australia by tho addition of Namakia and the hurdler Soloist, both of whom

have been in Melbourne since last spring. The Hawera trainer makes no secret of the fact that he would like to take up permanent residence in tho Commonwealth. However, for many years he has had a large team in work at Hawera and, although it was recently rumoured that ho may reside in Melbourne, it appears unlikely that Fryer will leave this province just yet. Earlier Successes

Fryer gained successes in earlier

visits with Gaine Carrington and Radiant Star, but it was not until last spring, when he won the Melbourne Cup with'Wotan in sensational circumstances, that he scored any great triumph. This year his team is the largest he has yet taken. Wotan is probably the star member and, provided that this delicately-constitutioned horse travels well, he may be capable, of proving that his cup victory was no fluke. JLtod Manfred, Black Friar and the rising two-year-old filly, China Clipper, will carry the colours of the Wanganui owner, Mrs. M. S. Curie. Red Manfred has displayed much promise in his few jumping essays and should he encounter dry tracks in Victoria, lie should pay expenses. Twelve months ago, Black Friar was regarded as an A.J.C. Derby prospect, but ho suffered extensive injuries on the boat going over from New Zealand and was unable to reveal his worth. He has been gelded in the interim and high hopes are entertained regarding his future. China Clipper is a handsome black

filly by Philamor from Sea Scout and she is regarded as a likely one for early spring racing.

Possible Cup Candidate

International is a prospective candidate for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, llis form has been promising and this big gelding should develop into a fine four-year-old. It would occasion little surprise if he proved the

'jst successful member of the team

Tout le Monde should hold his own among the Victorian hurdlers, as he is a line stayer and a good fencer. The dry tracks likely to bo encountered across tho Tasman are deemed to be a factor in his favour. Two members of tho team likely to do well are the rising three-year-olds, Manage and Pautoon. Although he has won only one race, Elanage has shown distinct promise since arriving at Hawcra and the Posterity colt has created a good impression in his few sprints.

Fryer's own two-year-old, Pantoon, has been patiently treated and afforded every chance to mature. He has started on four occasions and has improved in condition. Pantoon is a nice type of galloper and if placed to advantage may prove a useful stake-earner.

Flying Chief will not be included in J. Fryer's team, in spite of his recent winning form.
