FLOODS IN THE SOUTH Serious floods, which resulted i» widespread destruction, occurred i' l Greymouth, Hokitika, Wellington, Christchurch and many other southern towns 50 years ago. The following account of the damage at Greymouth is from the New Zk.vla.nd Heuaij) of .July 8, ISS7: — " Never had such a flood been known here. It was two feet higher than tin) disastrous one of 1872. Nearly the whole of the town was inundated; P n '-' the terrace portion escaped, i lie destruction of property is cnonnoup. ''' v^. rv shop, hotel and business place along tlx Mawhera Qiyty was flooded three ana lour feet deep. From three in the morning until 10 o'clock boats were plying rescuing people. Jhe appearance of the town this morning is most deplorable. Thousands of loads of shingle at piled in some streets, while great holes are scoured away in others. Ine town was cut off from postal and telegraph communication during Wednesday anc the greater part of Thursday.
