ANIMALS RUN ON BRIDGE
FOUR FALL INTO CREEK
EXPRESS AN HOUR LATE
[llY TKCEG It Al'll—OWN CORRESPONDENT XEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday
The Wanganui to New Plymouth express was delayed an hour this morning, when it encountered cattle on the lino. Seven cattle that were being driven over a level crossing of the line between Mokoia and Ha\\\.ra broke away Irom the herd, jumped the cattle stops and ran along the lino just before the express was due. The engine-driver saw the cattle 111 time to stop without running into them. The. cattle, after careering along the lino, ran on to a bridge. Owing to the gaps between the timber carrying the rails the cows had difficulty in retaining a looting, and, although care was used during attempts to get them off the bridge, four fell into the creek below. The other three were driven off safelv.
Had the cattle been struck by the train on the bridge a derailment would probably have occurred. The train was an hour late arriving at New Plymouth.
