* IRISH COMET'S CAREER MAIDEN THREE MONTHS AGO WINNINGS AMOUNT TO £2090 More than scvon years ago at the To Kuiti meeting, a small six-year-old fielding faced the starter for the first time, and little hope was held for him as a performer on the flat. He was presented for three maiden events that season, without winning anything or attracting any notice. The gelding was Jrish Comet, and for the three following years nothing was seen of him on the racecourses. He resumed racing as a. ten-year-old, this time as a juniper, but in eight attempts, lie was not placed, nor was ho any luckier in his one appearance the following year. Four placed performances in nine starts went to his credit last season, the value of the place-money being 1-220, which was an inconsiderable sunt to balance against his keep for a dozen years. Nevertheless, there was merit in his second a year ago to Tangled in the Hunt Club Cup, and in his second also to Forest Glow in the Winter Steeples. His owner, j\lr. K. .1. Sexton, had expectations of his securing a good stake this term. The beginning was not auspicious. At, the I'akuranga Hunt mooting, Irish Comet fell at the last fence when leading in the Hunt Cup. Then at Ellcrslie in October, he was respectively second and fourth in his two starts, both over country. Meturning to Kllorslie for the Summer Meeting after a run at Tc Hapa, Irish Comet took third place in the Auckland H u nl lew.
His success in the McGuiro Steeples at, the Ohiiieiiiuri meeting on March I:S was the first of his career, so that in less than three months, this jumper has graduated from maiden company to winner of the most valuable and most spectacular steeplechase in the Dominion. In his second appearance at the Paeroa gathering, he was beaten in the Hauraki Plains Steeples by Don Krma and Valpoen. A second victory came in the Mangere Steeples at the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, and the winning stake of JJ2OO was the most Valuable he had secured until last Wednesday. In the Autumn Steeplechase, ho had to strike his colours to two really good jumpers, Tudor and Forest Glow. Starting last Saturday week in the Great Northern Hurdles, Irish Comet never was prominent and he finished tenth. On the following Wednesday, he became famous and increased his total winnings by JCHoO to £lf)t3v>. He has started 3<l * times for four wins, four seconds and four thirds.
On both sides of his pedigree, Irish Comet has notable jumping strains. He is by Day Comet, sire of many good winners' over obstacles, including Aurora Borenlia, and his dam, I'apo of the Lock, is a daughter of Spalpeen, a successful sire of jumpers, including El Gallo. twice winner of tho Great Northern double, and Waimai.
