POVERTY BAY WINS

DEFEAT OF WAIRARAPA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] GISBORNE, Sunday In a representative Rugby gamo marked by dropped passes and lost opportunities Poverty Bay scored a lucky win over Wairarapa by J1 points to It. Although Wairarapa was slow in settling down, once it did so it shadowed Poverty Bay in all departments, except iu loose forward play. The visiting backs were most dangerous when attacking, but their possibilities were reduced by faulty positional play. Poverty Bay early had Wairarana troubled, being eight points up in the first 25 minutes. From then on Wairarapa held slightly tho upper hand. Both back lines made efforts to open up the game, but Poverty Bay failed mainly through greenness. Sharp stood out in tho chain, while at fullback Brown was solid. Hume, the visitors' second fiveeighths. was the star back on tho ground, ghing a splendid exhibition. Brunton. in the centre, also figured prominently. Heading the Poverty Bay forwards, Ware worked like a Trojan, but the pack to a man was solid. F. McAneney, Steel and Rogers were always prominent. Of tho visiting pack Varcoe, Percy, Crookenstcn and McGregor stood out. Wairarapa's luck was out when, two minutes before tho end, Hattorr missed a field goal, the ball bittinc an upright and rebounding. Tries for Poverty Bay were scored by A. McAneney, Grant, and Moeau, Brown converting one and kickincr a penalty goal. Eastwood, who displayed great speed, scored both Wairarapa's tries. Brunton converting one and kicking a penalty goal.
