STRAIN OF STUDY
TRAINING teacheks DUPLICATION OF WORK THE MINISTER'S CONCERN The problem of the duplication of the demands made upon teachers in training by their training college and the university was discussed by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Eraser, at the opening of the Training College Assembly Hall on Saturday afternoon. "For many years I have been of opinion," he said, "that the dyal strain placed upon our students who attend the training colleges and also take university classes is very severe upon their physical endurance." Mr. Eraser described the inquiries he had had made by all the authorities concerned before the reopening of the Wellington Training Collego at the beginning of last year as to whether there* was no possibility of the college amalgamating with the university. He was disappointed when the report came that there was no possibility at the time of Victoria College providing for the training of teachers. However, they proposed a board of studies that would, as far as possible, eliminate the duplication of study.
He had seen students swotting for the training college and swotting for the university simultaneously, the Minister added, and taking part in the games and perhaps the drama groups of both institutions. He felt that surely there must be some way of eliminating for
the benefit of all this sort of competition going on in one person. There was the problem, and lie knew there were difficulties in the way of its solution. He was leaving it to the expert educationists to see if they could not devise some better synchronisation between the training college and the university.
