CLEANING A TYPEWRITER It would do the typewriter no harm to immerse it in a bath of petrol; but by far the best cleanser to use is benzoline, which is a more refined form of cleaning oil. Lift out the rubber roller or rollers first (also rubber caps over the keys, if there are any), although it would do no harm to rub the rollers over with a rag dipped in benzoline. The inked ribbon should, of course, be removed before cleaning operations, which should be carried on well away from fires or lights, preferably in the open air. After cleaning, let the typewriter dry thoroughly in an airy place. As petrol and benzoline both have a drying effect, the typewriter should be well oiled before being used again.
