HONOURS TO AUCKLAND
FAILURE OF OTAGO A bright exhibition of good, clean hockey was provided in the final match between Auckland and Otago. Auckland, however, was decidedly the better side, and combined well as a team. The local eleven was nearly always in Otago's half of the field and dominated the play. The fact that Henderson, in Auckland's goal, touched the ball only twice indicates the one-sided nature of the game. Good clearances by the backs and forceful penetrating rushes by the forwards enabled Auckland to secure three goals before half-time. In the second half Otago rallied, but its efforts were frustrated. The local team was pressing hard when time was railed. All the Auckland forwards played good games. Greenbank and Yule made some good runs down the wing, whilo Cooper, Broun and Braithwaite combined well. Watson and Broun were the best of the halves, Miller being a weak link. Hogben and Cawkwell were sound fullbacks, Alldred and Warren were the best Otago forwards and Wickham was a hard worker in the half line, and Kerens made some great, saves in goal. Watson scored two goals for Auckland with two beautiful corner shots. Braithwaite C~>. A. Broun and Greenbank also netted. Messrs. H. Watts and G. Wells were the umpires.
THE MOST LOSSES The "wooden spoon" for the team having tho most losses was won by Auckland B, which lost to Massey Agricultural College by fivo goals to one. Massey played its best game of the tournament, and showed great, improvement. Fetch scored all the goals for the winner and Hansen netted for Auckland B. Messrs. H. Hay and H. Skinner were tho umpires.
FRIENDLY GAMES
Two friendly matches were played and Canterbury had to work hard to defeat Auckland B by four goals to three, while Victoria prevailed over Massey by four goals to two.
In the former game Duffield netted twice and Walter and Cole once for Canterbury. Perry (2) and Wilson scored for Auckland B. For Victoria Newcombe (3) and Chisolm were the scorers, while Fetch secured both Massey's goals. Messrs. G. Wolls and J. Donaldson and Messrs. H. Skinner and A. McLean were the umpires in the respective matches.
LADIES' MATCHES AUCKLAND UNLUCKY Auckland was the better team in the final ladies' match against Otago and was very unlucky only to secure a draw. Otago seemed the strongest side in the competition on Thursday, but yesterday Auckland caused a surprise by revealing brilliance. The game was easily the best of the tournament and play was of a high standard throughout. Auckland was on the attack most of the time, but the Otago backs defended solidly. Iri the first half, both forward lines combined well, but Otago was unfortunate not to score more lh;in once. Auckland led 2 —l at half-time. Although Auckland made many attacks in the second spell it was unable to penetrate the defence. The Otago forwards were smothered by the Auckland backs, but they showed great dash when they secured possession. All the Auckland forwards played well, B. Hooton being outstanding with' good solo runs. M Rowan was the best of a strong hack division. R. Grigg, N. Stewart and J. Tlamer combined effectively in the Otago front line, while XI. Johnston and L Humphries were prominent in the hacks. Goals were scored for Auckland by E. King Mason and M. Barr, while J. Hamer netted twice for Otago Messrs. If. E. Watts and G. Gutry were the umpires.
WIN FOR CANTERBURY Uninteresting: hockey was prodnced in the match in which Canterbury heat Victoria by four goals to one. Sinco the result had no bearing on the winners of the competition both teams lacked dash and the sramc was played in a very friendly spirit. R. Andrews scored twice and E. Deibert and B. Morgan once for Canterbury and N. Goldsbury for Victoria. Messrs. J. Foster and 11. Hay were tlio umpires. NEW ZEALAND "BLUES" SELECTION OF TEAMS Mr. E.
