WIDOW'S DEATH
SEQUEL TO COLLISION ACCIDENT AT HAMILTON THE CORONER'S VERDICT [fro a OUR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON. Friday An inquest was held by the coroner, Mr. F. W. Platts, to-day, into the death of Mrs. Joan MeAsey, aged 53, a widow, of Firth Street, Hamilton • East, who died on May 4 as the result of injuries received in a motor accident near her home on the evening of May 2 Sergeant T. Kelly appeared for the police, Mr. H. J. McMullio represented the relatives of deceased, and Mr. W J. King the driver of one of the vehicles concerned. William Cook, painter. Hamilton, said that deceased was driving witness' oar at the time of the accident, witness being a passenger in the vehicle. , Mrs. MeAsey was returning home from Waharoa, and when crossing the I'irth and Wellington Streets intersection at -10 miles an hour the car was involved in a collision with another car which had been travelling west along Wellington Street. Opinion Regarding Speed Witness said he did not hear the driver of the. other car sound his horn. In witness' opinion, the other ear was travelling at a high speed. Mrs. MeAsey had been driving for 14 years. Charles Kemp Brocklesby, lorry driver, Matamata, gave evidence that he was driving his car along Wellington Street at 20 miles an hour. He heard no horn and saw no lights as he approached the intersection with Firth Street and was not aware of * the presence of the other car until immediately before the impact. He had : no time in which to avoid the accident. The night had been wet and the visibility was bad. Gave Warning ol Approach Witness said he sounded his horn before approaching the corner. He applied his brakes, but his car continued for 31ft., carrying the other car with it. He gave warning of his approach to the intersection. ,A companion of the last witness, Mavis Peterson, gave evidence that she saw no lights of an approaching car near the intersection. Broeklcsby's car -was driven at from 20 to 25 miles an hour on the correct side of the road np to the point of the impact. The lights of Brocklesby's car were burning, The coroner returned a verdict that 'deceased- died from injuries received on Mav 2.- when a car driven by C. K Brcieklesby collided with the car deceased was driving.
