STATE HOUSING
CONDITIONS OF TENDERS CRITICISM AT HAMILTON [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The fear that if large contracting firms submitted the successful tenders for the State housing scheme in Hamilton they might establish themselves permanently in the town was expressed at last night's annual meeting of the Hamilton Master Builders' and Contractors' Association. A special effort to submit tenders was called for from Hamilton builders, said Mr. D. 1. Gate. At least one member should submit a tender, said Mr. F. C. Church, in an attempt to prevent proprietary concerns from obtaining all the contracts. Unfortunately most builders in the town were extremely busy at present. The Government s method of fixing contracts for its housing scheme by a system of schedules of quantities instead of straight out tendering was criticised by several members. * A motion that the Government be asked to eliminate schedules of quantities and call for direct tenders was carried, and it was decided to ask Mr. C. A. Barrell, M.P., for his support.
