CHURCH OF CHRIST
FOUNDATION IN AUCKLAND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS The 92nd anniversary of the Associated Churches of Christ in Auckland will be celebrated to-morrow in tho Ponsonby Church of tho denomination. The earliest members of the denomination to settle in Auckland met for worship in private homes as far back as 1845, and- for a timo regular services were held in a room in Partington's Windmill in Symond's Street. Later places' of meeting wore the Oddfellows Hall in High Street and tho Protestant Hall in Karangabapo Road. A fresh impetus was given to the cause by the arrival of a number of adherents "by the ships Matilda Watton bach and the Hanover in 186.'}, and seven years later the erection of their first church building was completed in Cook Street. Two well-known pioneers, Messrs. Robert Laing and Matthew Wood Green, cut tho timber for the church with a pitsaw on Captain Rattray's farm at Matakana. Tho congregation continued to worship in tho building for 27 years. The present building in Ponsonby Road was erected in 1897, and from it have sprung nine others in and around | Auckland and a further 10 in the Auckland province. Tho present minister of i*tho church is Mr. E. L. .Williams.
