WINTER MEETING
ACCEPTANCES TO-DAY
GREAT NORTHERN FANCIES INTEREST IN JOLLY BEGGAR CHANCES OF TOUT LE MC§3DE An important stage in connection with the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting at Ellerslie on June ~>, 9 and 12 will be reached to-day when acceptances for the Great Northerns and the handicap events on the first day are due at o p.m. It is certain that the fields for the Great Northerns will be considerably reduced but there should be a good response from owners and the acceptances should be well up to the average even though the general entries for the meeting fell short of last year's total. As a result of the form they revealed at Te Rapa„ Jolly Beggar, Lord Val. Black Marliu and High Quality have advanced in favour for tho Great Northern Hurdles and Black .Marlin and Free Air for the Great Northern Steeplechase. The Hurdles topweight, Jolly Beggar, worked soundly at Te Rapa yesterday m company with Royal Liinond and Tout le Monde, and later in the day travelled to Ellerslie. Jolly Beggar is a true stayer and, although he will have to establish a weightcarrying record for the race since the distance was extended to two and a half miles in 1907 to score with 11.13, his prospects appear bright. When Tout le Monde was racing on the flat he earned the reputation of being unreliable and his performances since he commenced his career as a hurdler have been varied. Although ho
has won twice, his other efforts have not been convincing and he disappointed a large number of supporters when he failed to gain a place in the Coronation Hurdles at Te Papa on Monday. Tout 1c Monde displayed a lot of dash in the middle stages and wont up very fast alone: the back only to retire in the straight. However, it may not be wise to discard him for that defeat, as he stays and jumps well and may be difficult to beat if caught in a generous mood in the Great Northern Hurdles. " On the flat Tout le Monde was a better stayer than most of those engaged in the Great Northern Hurdles and on the score of breeding he lias much to recommend him. Foaled in 1929, he is by Limond from Aspic, by Polymelia from Jelly, by Isinglass from Lady Ailsa, by Ayrshire, ho has good breeding and may prove one of the best of tho field over the long journey. His owner-trainer, J. Fryer, prepared Stanchion, another son of Limond, to win the Great Northern Hurdles in 19; Jo.
Merry Lap was withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting at 1.50 p.m. yesterday. Merry Lap injured himself while racing at Te Papa and it is probable that his racing career is at an end.
TAKANINI TRAINING PROFESSIONAL GOES WELL HALF-MILE BY MIA ACREA After the tracks had begun to dry more rain fell to hinder the work at Takanini yesterday morning, when the outside grass and the plough were available. On the grass Spearcourt (Tinker), after trotting exercise, went twice round, running the first five furlongs in 1.17, the last five of the next round in 1.13, and his last mile in 1.57. Spearcourt is a lazv worker, but stars very well. Mia Acrea (Stone) ran half a mile fn 535, taking 40s over the last three furlongs. Mia Acrea, with C. Walters up, gave an encouraging display for a beginner over hurdles on Tuesday morning. Royal Passage (Mudford), on the inside, was not going as well as Professional (T. Green) at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.33 3-5. They ran the first two in 26 3-os and the last three furlongs in 41s. Ivy Willonvx (Jones) ran an even half-milo in 53 3-os. High Quality (Walters) moved freely over two rounds. He again stifled himself before finishing third in the hurdles at Te Rapa on Monday, but the injury is not serious.
On-the plough useful work was accomplished by High Tea, Disturbed, Silver Glow, Te Poto, Grateful, Highborn. Sub-Editor, Miss Lovelock, Pamila, Gai Wind* and Lady Ruler. High Sea and Disturbed, now geldings, have had a lengthy spell, and both are now in excellent health. Pamila is the name registered for Mr. Wood's filly by paladin—Gazelia. She is coming to hand nicely. Grateful looks none the worse for his race at Te Rapa, and should show to advantage in his Ellerslie engagements. Parquet and Inquisitor, in C. .Morse's Stable, are on the easy list for the winter .months, as neither acts well in heavy going.
ARRIVAL OF VISITORS ROYAL LIMOND INCLUDED Ihe southern horses Royal Limond, Jollv Beggar, and Peter Beckford, who worked at'Tc Rapa yesterday morning, reached Ellerslie by "motor float in the afternoon. They came through their racing at the Waikato meeting satisfactorily and their presence will add interest to the training operations this morning. Boomerang is another visitor arrive, and looked well when doing Steady pacing on the sand yesterday.
