RATES RAISED BY 2D TEPID BATHS ATTENDANT [BY TET.F,GRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TVATTU, Thursday The Waihi borough general rate will be increased by 2d, making it. 4s Id in the pound on annual value. This was decided at a special meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when the estimates for the financial year were considered. During the financial year the council had reduced its overdraft considerably, said the Mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt. The purchase of new plant cost £(].'il. The additional wages bill due to the recent legislation, improvements at Waihi Beach, and works of a permanent nature for the most part bad been provided for from revenue. Tt would be necessary to increase the general rate by 2d in the pound to meet the demand of increased costs.

With regard to the tepid baths, the Mayor explained that it was proposed to offer the caretaker 90 per cent of the takings, with a guarantee from the council of at least £1 a week. Mr. J. Mitchell took strong exception to the offer and contended that the council should pay the basic wage. He moved as an amendment that the caretaker be paid £4 10s a week spread over five days. The original proposal was carried bv four votes to two.
