DAIRY EMPLOYEES

COURSE AT MASSEY COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID RECOMMENDED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAXGAREI, Thursday At the annual North Auckland dairy conference yesterday, Mr. J. H. Hayward (Maungatapere) raised the question of giving financial assistance, by either the individual dairy companies or by the New Zealand DairyBoard, to factory employees who wish to take a course at Massev College. "Such a course is of great benefit, but many employees are not in the financial position to avail themselves of the opportunity owing to the expense," said Mr. Hayward. "liutter manufacture is becoming more and more technical and it is desirable that all first and second assistants, at least, should have a course at the college in order that the quality of our butter should be further improved, and I firmly believe that this . assistance should come out of the funds of the Dairy Board."

Mr. A. Morton, president of the National Dairy Association, who presided. said it would be quite impossible for the Dairy Board to provide funds for such a purpose. He agreed, however, that as far as dairy companies were concerned, it was important that factory employees should take the course of instruction, and lie urged every factory to give every facility to employees to do this. "1 believe the time is coming when all appointments for higher grading positions will require that the successful applicant should have had a course at the Massey College," said Mr. Morton. Mr. S. Berridge, manager or the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company, Limited, said that the companies might finance a keen man to go to the college, but he should repay the money by instalments. It was finally decided that it should be a recommendation to the companies that suitable employees should be subsidised oil the total cost of the course.
