MORTGAGE ADJUSTMENT
DELAYS IN SETTLEMENT - COMPLAINTS IN BAY OF PLENTY ? [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] \ GISBORNE, "Wednesday *2 "The Government is doing its bestC to overcome the difficulties created by the congestion of business for the existing mortgage adjustment commissions.* and the Bay of Plenty is to have an additional authority to deal with these--cases, leaving the authority with head-. , quarters at Gisborne to adjust applications on the Gisborne side of the" ranges," said the Postmaster-GeneFal, the Hon. F. Jones, in the course ef an address in Tolaga Bay.' *. The Minister was referring to a complaint that too much delay was occurring in connection with the finalising or mortgage adjustment applications. The matter was raised by Mr. P. T. Weeks, who said some people of the county were disappointed at the ' rate of progress in connection with completion of applications, statutory provisions having been started in 1931 and no single case that he,' knew of having been settled definitely in Uawa County with the exception.* of those which had been mutually agreed upon. Mr. J. P. Guthrie, who welcomed the" Minister on behalf of the Tolaga Bay branch of the Labour Party, said he knew of one case in Uawa County in" which an occupant ofs~land had paid, nothing for a long time and was' sheltering behind the Act, while the people whose property he occupied were: seriously hampered and subjected to hardship. Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M.P. for the district, said there were ( cases where-;, the income from properties under „a-?' commission's jurisdiction was being dissipated, and these were difficult to. control. It had been made clear that, the dissipation of income would not assist an applicant for relief when his case was gone into,- but Mr. Hultquist agreed that this was not of much as-, sistance to the person who owned the property the income from which was being dissipated. ~ The adjustment of mortgages was" taking some time, said Mr. Jones in reply. It was necessary, however, to stick to the rulos laid down and hasted could not be achieved with any satis--faction to all parties." He thought the appointment of the eXtra commission for the Bay of Plenty would speed up the process of settlement and gradually, wipe out the causes' of dissatisfaction, in individual cases.
