AMALGAMATION ISSUE
TARANAKI LOCAL BODIES OBJECTION TO COMPULSION [by T El, 10C.lt A PR —I'KKSS ASSOCIATION'] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday Representatives of all the county councils in Taranaki at a meeting today opposed the principle of compulsory amalgamation of local bodies. They passed a resolution of objection and urged that county councils hold meetings at which ratepayers could express their views. There were more than 50 delegates' at the meeting. One speaker said he was not definitely opposed to amalgamation, but he urged that special attention bo given to backblock areas. The resolution carried was as follows: —" That this meeting of Taranaki county councils is emphatically opposed to the compulsory amalgamation of Taranaki local bodies on the grounds that no economy would result, that efficiency would suffer, and that community of interest would bo lost. The meeting, however, favours voluntary amalgamation if and when a vote of ratepayers concerned is taken."
