WINTER TROTTING

PREPARING FOR JUfiE ACTIVITIES IN WAIKATO C. R. WOOD'S CANDIDATES BY ABAYDOS Waikato-trained horses, many of whom have raced successfully this season, will be well represented at the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting on June 19 and 23, when the North Island season will be concluded. As C. 11. Wood is remaining at Claudelands, Winaway and Kia Kalia have returned to Takaninr. Wood will be represented at Epsom by Bronte and Baron Derby, Claudelands having been turned out. On Tuesday Bronte worked solidly.

Baron Derby has shaken off the soreness which kept him from fulfilling his engagements. Wood has Joyce Worthy in good condition and the grey mare is making progress. A maiden by Our Thorpe—Uniform, full-sister to Taipare, Kia Kalia and To Mahanga, is shapina well, in colour she resembles To Mahanga. Rockella Changes Hands C. Moran's string has been further reduced by the sale of Roekella to an Auckland owner, but Valdor, Silk Cord and Compass are in steady work. Valdor should derive benefit from his recent race. Silk Cord may be taken south and returned to his owner after the Ashburton meeting. Compass has shown encouraging form in his last few races and he appears to relish soft tracks. Lady Keller, a promising fill.v, is having an easy time. Derby Lu and King's Knight are receiving attention from A. W. Broughton. Derby Lu ran creditably in her last two starts. When attuned, she is a good mare. Although he has not been successful for 12 months, King's Knight is showing signs of returning form.

E. P. Smith is giving Sir Frank, Hori Bingen .and Master Hamilton a short respite. The mainstay of tho stable, Sir Frank, has shown consistent form at the autumn meetings and will be well suited off the limit of the 3.35 class at Epsom. Bingen Chief Reappears W. E. Cockbill is persevering with Bingen Chief. Two seasons ago lie won several two-mile handicaps, but he has not raced for a long timo. Bingen Chief will have his immediate opportunities in shorter races. L. N. Vernal! is keeping Our Mc* Kinney going with a view to contesting the Adams Memorial Cup. The fact that he was runner-up in his last two attempts will draw attention to his prospects. He has made improvement in stamina and handles heavy ground well. Our Peggy can be expected to do much better at Auckland on the limit of the Hobson Handicap of 3.30. F. Smith's mare won three races in succession, and after failing in the Thames Cup she registered a second at Epsom to Imposter, who was more favoured by the heavy going. Our Peggy has had time to freshen and should have good prospects. Tamahere Horses

With King's Play, Lady Fame, Hearsay, King Country and Guide Peter I\L. Stewart has good material on which to work at Tajnahere, although the defeat of Guide Peter at Hamilton will mean his giving away 36 yards to start at Epsom. King Country, whgse spring form was of a high order, did not do well on the trip to Wanganui and Hawera, but the subsequent spell has been beneficial. Hearsay lias recent winning form. King's Plaj' and Lady Fame are in the same classes, and, while the latter lias raced well at two miles, King's Play has been the more successful. At Claudelands King's Play was having his first race for several months and lie should be improved when next paraded. \Y. F. Saunders has hope.s that Our Summer will yet strike the form that previously won him races and a little improvement on his last few displays will give the brother to Jackie Thorpe more than an outside chance. Gipsy Light, although showing speed, has nov developed solidness. Jackie Thorpe has not had much racing since he was spelled two years ago, after a very successful season, but, with the softening of the tracks, he only requires to strike form to have prospects.
