MANUFACTURE OF .GOLD . The advancement of scientific knowledge clurinp the past 50 years is illustrated by the following extract from the Ni'.w Zealand Herald of May 20. ISS7: —- "A very extraordinary article api>cai\s in a late number of the Scientific American, giving reasons for the belief that mercury is a compound of go a and a rare metal called thallium, it this thcorv is .true, and some eon vein* out mean's is -found for decomposing mercury, the production of gold will be verv largely increased, as mercury ores are found very abundantly in various parts of the earth." : Another extract states: —'Hie Czar, Czarina and" Czarewich, and members of the Imperial family, made a state entry to-day into tlio city of .Novo Tcherkask. the capital of the Don Lossack country. It is reported that persons implicated in a plot to assassinate the Czar have been arrested there.
