DIMMING LIGHTS
CORONER'S COMMENT CAUSE OF A FATALITY COMPULSION SUGGESTED [BY TEL K(; It A I'll —-I'ltl'.SS association] \VELLINfiTON, Wedncsday "The title 'road hog' is a very apt one, especially for a motorist who wants all the road and won't dip his lights when you dip yours. It would be very much safer if the dimming of lights when passing were made compulsory for all. The glare resulting from a road hog's refusal to dim was clearly the cause of this fatality."
The foregoing remarks were made by Mr. Gilbertson, coroner, iu returning a finding that Mr. Allred James Stanlev Colenso, aged 41, a labourer, died on the Upper Hutt Road on the evening of April 150 from head injuries suffered as tlic result of being knocked down by a motor-car.
The coroner said the accident was caused by the glare from the lights of an approaching car. The driver of the car which struck deceased dipped his lights, but the other driver had not been sufficiently courteous to do the same. Deceased could easily have been picked up if the other car's lights had been dimmed. Mr. Colenso was struck by a car driven by Mr. Horace Noel Mason, aged 22. It was raining at the time and visibility was poor. Mr. Colenso was walking on the bitumen road carrying a swag.
