UNSETTLED AND COLDER RAIN IN MOST DISTRICTS The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —A depression is crossing tie Dominion to-day, its centre extending over the northern portion of the South Island, while an anti-cyclone is advancing across the Tasman Sea. The forecast is for northerly winds at first from Cook Strait northwards; elsewhere southerly and southerlies becoming general by morning, moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force at places, more especially about Cook Strait and on the east coast of the South Island. Seas rough south of Castlepoint and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong southerly winds, later tending westerly, in the southern portion; seas rather rough. The weather is likely to be unsettled with further rain in most districts ana some heavy falls in central parts and also on the east coast of the South Island, some snow on the ranges and hail in places. Improving gradually to-morrow, especially on the west coast of the South Island. Temperatures becoming cold.

SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST CLOrDY TO OVERCAST The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast tor the Auckland Province: —Moderate to strong northerly winds backing to westerly ami ia places south-westerly on Thursday. The weather is likely to be cloudy to overcast, with much mist or fog in placesand fairly general rain, but improving somewhat during Thursday. Temperatures becoming cooler. Seas moderate lout increasing on the west coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—Light rain fell steadily during the earlier part of yesterday morning, but the afternoon was fine, although cloudy. Conditions were mild and there was a moderate northerly wind. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29,95 in, Midnight, Tuesday .. .. 23,95 m, Wellington. —It was mild but overcast in Wellington with occasional hearv showers accompanying a strong and squally north-westerly wind. The maximum temperature was 57.9 degrees. Christchtirch. —The day was cold and overcast, with occasional showers of rain. A fresh south-west wind was blowing. The maximum temperature was 5()T9 degrees. The barometer registered 29.83 inches at -5 p.m. and was rising. Dunedin. —The day was again dull and for the .fourth consecutive day no sunshine was recorded. There was a slight breeze from the south-east and the mist of the past few days, cleared away. The maximum temperature was 56 degrees - and tne barometer rose to 29.94 inches. *
