TOOK WRONG CAR

SEQUEL TO PAETY

CHARGED WITH CONVERSION MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE [jlY TELEGRAPH —OWK CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday An unusual type of car conversion case, was the subject of a police prosecution in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A party, which several witnesses described as being a bit merry, was frequently mentioned when Leslie Tattle, a married man, aged 30, was charged with converting to his own use on April 10 a motor-car valued at £IOO, the property of Wilbert Harwood Wallace.

Tattle and Wallace are workmates on a tar-sealing contract on the SansonHimatangi highway. Tattle removed Wallace's car from outside a house where both were attending a party, and when he drove back a few minutes later Wallace said he would hear more of v it. To the charge which was the sequel Tattle pleaded not guilty through his counsel, Mr. M. 11. Oram. Sergeant O'Donnell said that when Wallace went outside from the house where the party was in progress his car was missing. A few minutes later Tattle drove up in it and when requested to apologise refused. Constable Chapman read a statement made by Tattle, in which he explained that lie had no intention of converting Wallace's car. He had been authorised to borrow another car outside the house where the party was. He knew now that Wallace's car was of a different [ make to that of his friend. | Mr. Oram: I submit that this information should be dismissed as trivial. Tattle is charged with a serious offence for which he is liable to a fine of £SO and the evidence is that the whole matter was trivial. The Magistrate: I cannot agree to that.

A fine of £3 was imposed, with costs
