Mainly due to a last-minute rush of business before the Coronation Day holiday trading was more active in the investment) market on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Values mainly were firmer and several fairly larpe gains were made. Dealing in- Government loans was heavy and a swing bv investors to giltedmcd stocks resulted in a steady strengthening of inscribed stock. Both jonrr and short-term issues were exchanged readily at higher levels. With the exception of New South Wales, banking issues tended to weaken. New Zealands, were marked down. Insurances were steady and South British made a 'slight forward movement. Jn the classified sections North Auckland Farmers. B preference, were marked down. Auckland Gas met with a keen inquiry at current levels. Breweries closed with a. firmer tone.

Following sharp rises in Australia G. J. Coles were lifted in dealing at up to £» 13s, a gain of 2s, but holders would 'later accept £5 12s. Electrolytic Zincs fluctuated, the preference issue moving up, while the ordinaries eased. Both were weaker at the close and a similar tendency was noticeable in Broken Hill Proprietary. Both Wilsons Cement and Taranaki Oils were easier. The Exchange will be closed to-day on the occasion of the Coronation. Business will resume at the morning call to-morrow.
