DAVIS CUP TEST

AUSTKALIAN TEAM

McGRATH'S RECOVERY ALL EAGER FOR PRACTICE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 10. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 9 The Australian Davis Cup team arrived in New York this morning and went directly to a leased private home at Forest Hills near the Stadium. Quist, Crawford and Bromwich are in fine shape and McGrath is much improved and certain to be ready to play against the Americans. Two days' rest is all he needs.

. Pending the start of practice the players will relax and devote their time to social engagements, and sightseeing. The courts are in splendid condition, owing to a mild winter and an early spring.

The arrival of the Australians brought a large crowd to Forest Hills. Motor-cars were parked over several blocks around the clubhouse. Walter Pate led a delegation of tennis notables, who welcomed the visitors. Soon the players were assigned quarters. They inspected the turf of the practice and playing courts and expressed their enthusiastic approval. McGrath is feeling so happy and fit that he announced his intention of practising On Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Quist played a round of golf in the afternoon with an American friend. Crawford spent most of the day in New York with his wife.

Mr. C. Sproule, manager of the Australian team, said the players were so, eager to try the turf that they may start daily practice on Monday instead of Tuesday. He anticipates that an extremely close series of games would be played against America. He believes that Australia, the United States and Germany are about equal strength, but he declined to predict the winner of the cup. He praised Bromwich as a player of unusual possibilities. Parker, the only member of the American team here, practised for an hour. Hunt and Grant are due on Monday and Budge and Mako on Tuesday. Joseph Wear is named as referee. NORWAY ELIMINATED FRANCE WINS RUBBER PARIS, May » In the Davis Cup tie, France versus Norway, Bernard and Petra (France) defeated Beer and Jensen in the doubles, 6—2, 6 —2. 6—2.
