ROAD ACCIDENTS

THE FIGURES FOR APRIL 1 17 KILLED AND 190 INJURED [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday Fatalities on roads throughout New Zealand during April totalled 17, and 190 persons were injured, according to figures supplied by the Transport Department. Since the road safety campaign was put into operation last September, tho number of deaths through accidents has declined. From September 1 until the end of April there were 124 deaths, as compared with 152 for the previous corresponding period, a decrease of 22.5 per cent, and during the last four months deaths fell from 86 to 77. The decreases have been made in spite of tho facfc that this year there are 27,500 more vehicles on tho roads. Since September 1 the number of persons reported injured amounts to 1225. The figures for fatalities cannot be taken as accurate, as in some cases persons reported as injured have died later. Tho following is a summary of road accidents since September 1:- September, 5 killed, 105 injured; October, 14, 72; November, 5, 121; December, 20, 215; January, 15, 155: February, 19, 170; March, 22, 197; April, 17, 190.
