RUN OVER BY TRUCK
WAIWERA CARRIER INJURED ENGINE CRANKED IN GEAR Serious injuries befell Mr. Walter J. Mathew, aged 32, of Waiwera, last evening, through cranking his motor truck while it was in gear. The engine fired, and before his wife, who was sitting in the cab, could apply the brakes, Mr. Mathew was thrown heavily and all four wheels of the truck passed over his body. Fortunately the vehicle was unladen. He suffered head injuries,, fractured ribs and internal injuries.
The accident happened in the township of Waiwera at about six o'clock last evening. Mr. Mathew was carried to the Waiwera hotel, where first aid was rendered. When Dr. R. V. Shaw, of Warkworth, arrived he ordered the injured man to be taken in a St. John ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. His condition late last night was considered to be serious.
Mr. Mathew was married only a month ago. He was engaged as a cartage sub-contractor to the firm of Bellingham Brothers, of Waiwera, who are working on the road between Waiwera and Puhoi.
