BANTAM SINGER VETERAN CAR AFTER 220,000 MILES CIRCLES NORTH ISLAND 1937 NEW SALOON COMPLETES SAME JOURNEY IN 48 HOURS, INCLUDING ALL STOPS Probably never have any cars given greater evidence of reliability than the two Bantam, 9 h.p. Singers, which completed a gruelling journey of 1229 miles round the North Island together on Saturday. The more remarkable performance was that of a veteran Bantam Singer which, having completed over 220,000 miles in taxi and private service, serenely circled the North Island without causing the two drivers one anxious moment. Precautions were taken to ensure that the test was purely one of reliability and not of speed. Speed limits and all other road regulations were strictly adhered Interviewed at the conclusion of their trip,* Messrs. Bone and Keegan, drivers of the veteran Bantam Singer, statedthat they were particularly pleased with the performance of the car. At no stage were they caused one /moment's anxiety and experienced neither mechanical nor tyre trouble. The utmost precautions were taken to make the test complete and fair. All speed and other regulations were carefully observed. The car was checked-in at all stopping points en route, shown on the map, by responsible people, including Mayors/ county chairmen, traffic officials and A.A. officers. Tools and tyre equipment were sealed before the journey commenced and the seals remained unbroken to the finish of the trip. Benzine Consumption The car averaged 37* miles to the gallon, of benzine, notwithstanding the fact that between Gisborne and Napier no less than 26 mobs of sheep were encountered and the road was mistaken at Opotiki, the result being that the car ' was driven over the treacherous,, very hilly and little-used old motor road; Wild Pigs Encountered As evidence of the little use this road now gets, the drivers were amazed to run into three wild pigs, •which they proceeded to chase down the road for some distance! Between Gisborne and Wairoa the party encountered a motbrist whose car had, gone over the bank, and, of course, -they stopped for threequarters of an hour to render assistance. Weather conditions were particularly trying, heavy rain and frost being encountered at different points of the journey. Todd, McL. Wallace and Miller, were accompanied by a well-known motoring authority, Mr. L. Grieves, who acted as official observer. They report an uneventful trip, accomplished without a trace of difficulty (not even a puncture to mar the smoothness of the trip). Benzine consumption worked out at 38£ miles per gallon. Weather conditions were severe, including particularly heavy rain and frost, and the road between Now Plymouth and Te Kuiti is reported to be in a bad state owing to road reconstruction. The car never held me up with any body or engine troubles and only small adjustments and running repairs were effected.
