DRAMATIC ART IN AUCKLAND

Sir, —With reference to Mr. Middleton's letter, may I add my voice to the plea for public attention. It is an unfortunate feature of our present social system that profit and money so rule the lives of men that their very creative urge for growth along natural lines is cramped by economic necessity. An arts block with free facility for music, drama and the arts would solve much of the youth problem in the big cities and is as obvious a necessity as playing fields and healthy sport. 1 suggest that it is more economic and consistent with the purpose of life to train youth unhampered in selfexpression than to spend millions on the machinery of the law to punish endless abnormalities produced bv unhealthy complexes resulting from suppression or perversion through lack of healthy release of the natural vital urges which, properly harnessed, build happy, healthy and intelligent peoples. In the meanwhile, good luck to a temporary expedient. H. C. Brace.
