BANK HOLIDAYS
COMPLAINT BY EMPLOYER INSUFFICIENT NOTICE A complaint that the observance of St. George's Day as a bank holiday had not been sufficiently advertised was received from an Auckland firm at yesterday's meeting of the general committee of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association. It was stated that banks which had previously advertised when they were not opening for business on any day during the ordinary working week had failed to do so with St. George's Day, on Friday, April 23. The only notice was advertised by the Auckland Savings Bank. Obscure saints' days and similar holidays were apt to pass unnoticed by the ordinary business firm, the letter stated, and unless these holidays were publicly advertised there was a danger of employees of some firms not obtaining their pay on the due date. The committee was asked to take up the matter and see whether the banks could be brought into line as regards holidays, or whether they could be compelled to advertise. "The day of England's patron saint could hardly be described as obscure." commented one member.
On the suggestion of the chairman, Mr. W. .la Truscott, it was decided that the secretary should include a list of bank holidays in the monthly magazine published by the association.
