FEDERAL BY-ELECTION

NEW SOUTH WALES SEAT LABOUR CANDIDATE LEADS (Received May t O, 5.C> p.m.) SYDNEY, May h One of the keenest by-election contests in the Federal arena for a long time occurred yesterday in the extensive Gwydir electorate, Northern New South Wales. The scat was vacated by Mr. C. L. Abbott, who recently took over the administratorship of the Northern Territory, and has been in the hands of the Country Party since 1931. Formerly it was held by Labour. There were three Country Party candidates on this occasion, Messrs. E. G. Bachelor, 0. L. Milling and G. S. Moore, as well as the official Labour candidate, Mr. W. J. Scully, who is a former member of the State Legislature The latest check on the voting figures reveals that Mr, Scully has an absolute majority of first preferences, while the outstanding votes will not permit the nearest Country Party candidate, Mr. Bachelor, to make up the leeway. Mr. Scully therefore will be returned. Both the political parties regard the outcome as an indication for the forthcoming Federal elections.
