WAIKATO SHOW ATTRACTION APPRECIATION BY A JUDGE [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT"! HAMILTON, Sunday The following remarks in appreciation of the prints exhibited at the New Zealand international photographic salon ;it. the Wnikato Winter Show nro made by Mr. Tl. K. Gaze, of TT.imil-_ ton, who, with Mi'. IT. Sclnnidt, of Auckland, and Mr. J. Trcloar. of Hamilton. judged the entries. There was a private view of the salon last evening. "Nothing like this salon has been seen before in New Zealand," said Mr. Gaze. "It is truly international in character, as in addition to Great, Britain and the British Dominions, the j United States and foreign countries are, represented. i "The highest award was unanimously given to Dr. Max Thorek, of Chicago University, for his picture 'Helen of, Troy.' Dr. Thorek has, by means of a camera, artistry and consummate skill, created a veritable triumph. He is above all things a creater of dramatic and romantic figure studies, and in contemplation of this example of his work wtih its powerfully posed and beautiful figures, the intensity of their expressions and the almost sinister background, one is impressed by a sense of impending doom. The whole tragic story is expressed more powerfully than it could bo by any other living camera pietorealist. "Miss Leila Black, of Christchurch, deserves praise for a delicate and beautiful still life study, t-ho title of which is 'Curves'," says Mr. Gaze of the New Zealand pictures. "In a print bearing the title 'Flight,' Miss Thelma Kent, of Christchurch, has been unusually successful. It is almost a 'closeup' of gulls in flight and they have made a delightful pattern resulting in a success quite unusual with birds on the wing. It is no surprise to know! tlmt it was exhibited at tho London Salon. "hi the professional portrait class there are few entries, and by far tho best of these come from Mr. Spencer Digbv. of Wellington. His portrait of Mr. Justice Blair succeeds in pose, lighting and tone in being unusually pictorial and is yet an excellent likeness. There arc several clever and interesting studies in the junior sections. The outstanding exhibitors in each of the classes are Sheila and Adeline Mtichatnoro, of Bristol. "Apart from the salon, mention should bo made of tho loan collection of camera figure studies by Mr. Hermann Schmidt, of Auckland. These are all remarkable for originality, pose, composition and gradation. Most of them, if not all, have been accepted bv the big salons of England and Europe."
