FOWL FEED INGREDIENTS
Pollard is tlie mainstay of every mixture and will constitute a little more or a little less than half, according to whether it is of indifferent or of cood quality. Confirming what lias been suggested before, the safest way is to let it vary with the bran* J hat is to say, if it is too "crumbly, ' as it usually is when of poor quality, put in more pollard and less bran, and if it is too sticky the proportion of pollard may be reduced. Subject to this precaution a suitable mixture for laying hens will be:—sUlb. pollard, 151b. bran, 151b. wheat meal. 101b maize meal, 101b. meat meal. It the birds have not been long accustomed to meat meal, they must start off with loss than 101b., in case it should upset their digestion, but it can then be held at the maximum during the winter reducing the proportion during the spring, and increasing it again tor the summer, when they otherwise tend to stop laying and to go into a moult. Part bone meal instead of all meat ■ neal will he still better, but meal meal can be safely omitted if the mash is being mixed with milk instead ot \va tor Those who Keep still larger Hooks, and decide to give the birds a wet mash in this way evtery morning, may find it worth while using snnced meat instead of meat meal, first boiling it into a kind of soup, for this forms an exceedinglv nutritious and appetising food It the birds are nil free .range bone meal will be sufficient, without any meat whatever, especially if the mash is mixed with milk. During summer weather the maize-meal may be reduced.
