WIDOW AND FAMILY
Sir, —It seems strange that a Government which has done so much to help the worker should not do something to make things a little easier for the widowed mother of a family, We all know that the cost of living has gone up tremendously. This we are told has been met with an increase in wages. But what of those who have no weekly wage coming in, but are dependent upon the widow's pension for herself and kiddies? The allowance for tho children remains what it has been for years, namely, 10s per week for each child, notwithstanding the l'act that it costs so very much more to clothe and feed them now. Tho mother herself receives £1 per week, an increase of 10s per week. There is nothing left for her when the rent has been paid. Tho strain and worry of bringing up the children without their father's help, and with such a very small amount of money, is telling on these women, many of whom have been struggling for years, and although still young, arc feeling worn out. Could not something be done to make lifo a little easier for them ? Sympathetic.
