KINDERGARTEN WORK
NORTHCOTE INSTITUTION The committee of the Northcote Free Kindergarten, comprising Mrs. A. Cowie (president), Mrs. W. P. Hay, Miss M. S. Newman (adviser), Mrs. A. J. W. Hodder (secretary), Mrs! C. H. Colegrove (treasurer), Mrs. H. N. Lecfo, Mrs. C. A. Peace, Mrs. W. K. A. Stewart, Mrs. A. Facer, Mrs. A. M. Nicholson and Mrs. F. w! Newman, yesterday entertained the parents of the children at mornjug tea. The visitors included the Mayoress of Northcote, Mrs. R. Martin," and Miss C. M. Colegrove, principal of the Auckland Kindergarten Association, who was accompanied by Miss M. Slingsbv Newman, vice-presi-dent of the "Auckland Kindergarten Council, Miss L. Smith and Miss 1. Laidlaw,- students. The Northcote director, Miss F. I. Gilfillan, was also gartens abroad -Miss Colegrove referred to the changes in recent years and to the larger sums of money being snent to modernise buildings, equipment and methods. Comparisons were made with what was being done in this direction in the Dominion, and the reasons were explained fof the need for the introduction of more enlightened methods. As the early years of a child's life had an important bearing on its whole future, the best possible environment was desirable. Suggestions were made (or ensuring a needful sense of security in the,child and a warning was also given to a\oid conflict with the child when trying to develop a spirit of obedience.
